Synopsis
- Upshot: I got out there and dragged Calen, too.
- Downside: My hip is killing me!
- What I'm most proud of: Just kept it light and easy and as enjoyable as possible.
- What I would do differently: Not get worried about potentially getting lost.
Overall
It's HOT! HOT! HOT! (But hips shouldn't be, should they?) (Unrelated, swimming is kinder to the body than running.) My right hip has been really giving me problems, and nothing short of not running or walking helps much. Today, I figured something out. I already know that I underpronate, and I know that my left leg is a half-inch shorter than my right leg. Also, when I walk/run, I do it with my toes splayed out and I definitely place one foot in front of the other, like walking on a balance beam. (How else would I have a killer sashay?) Unfortunately, this kills me, causing noticeable discomfort on the outside of the hip, especially the right side. I've been trying to retrain my stride to simply move the leg straight forward, but it's hard to break a walking habit of 28+ years.
I dunno' … It just feels tight. Tight like popping tight and achy-upper-leg-hip-hurt. Hmmmm … knowing what I know about my biomechanics, I take care to make sure I don't always run with the road camber excessibly on one side or the other. I still do my stretching, warm-ups, and cooldowns. The only thing I can think of is that either stopping Pilates is having an adverse effect (weak core?) or adding swimming has aggrevated the problem. Everything I've read says that it's usually from doing too much too soon, but I didn't increase mileage or speed play more than the 10% recommended at any time (unless we count the recent swimming, but it's no impact and I'm not kicking much anyway).
I did have this problem with the left side two months ago, and I took a little rest and then it was fine and never had a problem since. I'm going to give some new stretches a try and just lay off the high-mileage running for four or five days (that seems like forever!). Play it by ear. The good news is that I did notice a significant difference in how my hip felt after swimming today. It hurt only a fraction of what it felt like before. It felt like it was actually allowing my leg to bend and walk like normal. Anyone else suffer this? I've got it narrowed down to probably being trochanteric bursitis (hip bursitis) or an upper iliotibial band inflammation. I'll ask my Tri coach sometime this week about it, I'm sure he'll have something to say about it. I just hope I don't have to see a doctor; I don't have medical insurance right now. Doh! Looks like RICE will be my path for the time being … become a little swim-fishy instead!
Just curious, anyone else dealt with something similar? How do you deal/cope/mend it?
